April 12 - April 16

  1. This guy reminds me of Captain Shakespeare in "Stardust." Although Capt. Shakespeare cares about his reputation and what people think about him this man does not seem to care. He shows who he is proudly and to me he is a hero. He is standing up to his own beliefs even if he is mocked, laughed at, or just the butt of everyone's jokes. I tip my hat to this mans courage, one of the qualities that we define a hero having, and this mans determination to be "heard," mainly through this choice of dress.

  2. Firstly, this man seems to be in a parade. So taking that into account, I would say that he is brave for going out like that in public. Not many have those guts.
Parade aside, this man is a sort of obvious transition from Captain Shakespeare in "Stardust". The main difference is, his 'mask', as we discussed in class, doesn't show who others may want him to be.
Mainly, people act differently because they want either attention, or to blend in. This man seems like one who wants attention, rather than Captain Shakespeare, who wanted to blend in with the masculine stereotypes, rather than being his true self.
This photo is very interesting, and colorful, to say the least. I could probably spend much more time scrutinizing it, but I think I got the gist of my opinion written down.

  3. I agree with Sam Nyberg that this man is like Captain Shakespeare, only he is not afraid to show himself. The difference is, I don't think that all those colors are necessarily the man's true self. I think maybe he is doing all this as a representation of a feminine man, even though he might not really feel that way on the inside.
No one can really be their true self all the time, they have to put on masks for different things. That is what I think of this picture. To me, it feels like a half-mask; kind of himself, but still not.
So I mostly agree with Sam, but sort of disagree.

  4. All righty then. I think this definetly goes along with the movie with how men can show a little femanism. This man is like Capt. Shakespeare in "Stardust". But, he just likes to show his femanistic side off in public while Shakespeare does not. He shows it in his secret closet. Men and women can show characteristics of the oppiste sex. It does not mean you are gay. It is showing who you are. So I think men and women can have masculine and femanine qualities.

  5. I agree i with Austin, men and women can show characteristics of the of the opposite sex. Men and women do have mixed qualities. How they portray those qualities is under speculation, but to me it is heroic and gutsy to show people what can be under the mask.

  6. Well let me start with some humor. This man is hot stuff! I love it. It's all about being comfortable in your own skin. When relating this to the movie we watched, I am reminded of Capt. Shakespeare and how insecure he felt. Unlike the man in this photo. He worried about his reputation and being known as a tough guy. But clearly wearing such exteme clothing should actually be more threatening because it shows you have guts.

  7. This man has some amazing self-confidence. This is an obvious example of shifted gender roles. This reminds me of Captain Shakespeare because it is a man who is dressed up in woman’s clothes. He is not afraid to go out in public. I think that this man is different from Shakespeare because I get the impression that this man may be dressed up simply for attention rather than how he actually feels. Captain Shakespeare tried to blend in with the crowd while this man is trying to stand out.

  8. o wow what can you not say about this picture. haha! I think this is guy is pretty brave for wearing this out and about. I think it is really funny. We have had some intense picteurs lately so it is nice to have a funny one this time. I also think it remains me of captian Shakespear in "Stardust". I like all the colors he is wearing. I hope he is in some kind of show or something. If not then o my.

  9. Like Ashley said you just have to be comfortable in your own skin even out in public. the guy in the picture doesn't care what people think of him and he probably has no humility left and thats why hes out in the public in the clothes that he is in. i wasn't there to see Capt. Shakespeare because i was at a track meet so i wasn't able to see what he was like or how he acted so i have no idea what the others are talking about when they refer to him.

  10. I agree with Melanie that this picture may be a half-mask. I think this man must be kind of feminine to walk around in public wearing that, but I think he is making a joke out of it at the same time to protect himself from being mocked. This is a way that people would laugh with him rather than at him. I’m not too sure that this man would wear this out in public everyday, rather than just for a parade or to show off.

  11. This guy is definately crossing the traditonal boundries of stories as well as modern day concepts of the males role in society. He is no where even remotely close to what many people would believe is exceptable for a man in America. I personally think that this picture is funny and a little akward/creepy, but otherwise I think as long as he's not in my bedroom then I'll be okay. Among other things, however, his choice in clothing and clothing colors disturbs me a little bit, the poodle thing doesn't help either. I guess what i'm trying to say is that his therapist should be notified. Soon. And I just noticed that my opinion basically sums up todays feelings on this kind of "Trans-Gender" role playing. It's just weird.

  12. i agree with what sam N. said about it reminding her of the captian off "Stardust". I think he is more then just looking like the captain he is also able to have characteristics of both women and male. I think when we frist see someone like that we are quick to think things just like i was but really we dont know enough of him to.

  13. this man is showing feminan qualities. but yet he could be doing this to just be funny if i could get the chance i would colar my self rainbow colars and walk down the streat with a dog like that also. but id never whear a dress doing it is pretty funny i must say who know he might be fames now just for doing this.

  14. The first thing that pops into my head when you see a picture liks this is "wow people have some guts". This is defintaly like how captian Shakespear dressed in the movie, it is not how you would expect a captian or an older guy with a dog to dress. The old man in the picture might just be doing this for a special occasion and not because thats what he felt like wearing that morning. The captian dressed like that because it made him feel good and he liked it. There probably a diference between the 2 men.

  15. I'm probably going to have to agree with Katie on the basis that he has a lot of self-confidence. I personally don't believe that I would be able to do that myself. Obviously for a substantial amount of cash I may consider it, but it's definately not something that I'd simply do on a whim. I also think that he does represent Captain Shakespeare quite well aside from the poodle thing. In my opinion though I think that it's very strange and that he should be monitored by the the government for possible acts of terrorism. well not really. I think he just needs to be watched closely. Very closely.

  16. well this man is extremely comforatble with his postion in this picture. Exactly how he decides to protray his feelings, or who he really is is more revealed withing how he acts, and how he decides to use his body language. Like others, this reminded me of Captain Shakespear in the movie. But this man is so elaborately dressed, would a person who knew the man realize who the man is? So, is this "role" hiding the actual identity of the man, or does he actually feel this way about himself? In this picture, i think this man is geniunely enjoying the attention. Maybe there is a little boy inside of all men, what just want to play dress up.

  17. In response to what Katie said,
I totally agree that this man is seeking attention, rather than what Captain did just to blend in. I think that reputations, and what people will think of a person holds so many people back from showing thier true colors. But i dont necessarly beleive that his man is just revealing himself, but rather revealing some laughs.

  18. I have to agree with what katie was saying about the diffrences between captian Shakespear and the guy in the photo. Im under the impression that the man is doing this as some sort of joke or for a certian cause, but captian Shakespear dresses femalely because he likes womans clothing. I also agree with what Brandon commented on as long as he is not in my bedroom i will be fine. =)

  19. This man can represent the abstract theme in "Stardust". "Stardust" does not make that much sense, and the way that this man is dressed also does not make any sense. It's like how, in the movie, there are so many people going after the same thing, the star or the neclace which is connected to the star, and this picture of the man seems to have so many different themes or colors, but they all seem to point to the same thing, randomness. Both the movie and the picture are leading to one main thing.

  20. I agree with most everyone on how this man can be like Captain Shakespeare. Captain S. is feminine and the man in the picture is also feminine, by the way that they dress. I also agree with how some people explained that Captian S. is quiet about his feminine side while the man in the picture is more brave, and shows his feminine side to the world.

  21. This guy is brave for marching with people and showing that he dont care if people know hes gay. Captin shakespear showld of been more like this man not caring who knew what he is he could still be the same place and power nomatter what hes like. i like that the guy painted his beard different collars i thought it was funny heck if i had the chance i would die my beard a bunck of random collars just to do it.

  22. This picture makes me laugh! Its nice not to have a picture like we usually do. It makes me think of Capt. Shakespear in the movie "Stardust". But i really dont think that this guy really cares about his rep. It also looks like hes in a parade so maybe its different then Capt. S because this guy is doing it for something and Capt. S did it for his own sake!

In response to what Ettje said, he is very comfortable with his position. And i agree with her about his costume and make-up is pretty much covering up who he is so he may not be recognized.

  24. that guy reminds me of joe at prom although i'm pretty sure joe looks better he is kind of a sexy beast but he must be from san fransisco or just california in general or be a wierd guy like charlie and billy but either way keep your distance are my words of advice

  25. i'm with sam no. on this one it looks like he is in a parade and that if i had to guess i would say it's in california and he is most likely not doing it for any reason other than himself because it's a gay rights parade
