Trickster deities break the rules of the gods or nature sometimes maliciously and usually, albeit unintentionally, with positive effects. Often, the rule-breaking takes the form of tricks or thievery. Tricksters can be foolish or cunning or both; they are often funny even when considered sacred or performing important cultural tasks that raise awareness and act as an equalizer between deities and mortals.

Hermes

I like these pictures. They show the juvenile side of Deity's, a human like quality. They many not be brainy or robust, but they are devious. I feel as if i can connect with that. Being a younger sibling i have been devious and it is so much fun. My favorites are of Krishna and Loki. Loki has the look of a warrior, but with "things" up his sleeves, very magician like yet human at the same time. Krishna looks to be lounging about without a care in the world. He Has that look of "I'm up to something" and it makes me smile cause i know i am the worst at being sneaky. Krishna's attitude in this picture remind me of HOBY, everytime i would "sneak" away from my group i had that attitude. So i feel that They both show the most human like qualities of the bunch there.
ReplyDeleteIf life was with out trickery or tricksters then life would be to perfect. Life needs a ballance between good and bad. Life would be to perfect to bland for any one to really live in. I know for shure if it just some how be came a utopia id probably go insane.
ReplyDeleteI think these pictures are quite inturesting in a way. When i look at them i dont see tricksters or rule breakers just other regular gods. If i did not know any better I would have guessd that they would have been normal. Although they express who the diffrent tricksters were in the diffrent cultures. When I look at Loki's picture it seems like he would want to hurt you rather then trick you, but the art of these pictures are stunning all the same
ReplyDeleteThese are really interesting pictures, and I love what they represent. I love the role of trickster gods as portrayed in our everyday lives. Sometimes it can be really annoying, but other times it's just funny. Also, it really can turn out to be all for the better of things. My favorite trickster god is Hermes, for reasons that aren't really specific enough for me to say, but my favorite of these pictures is of Raven. It's a really interesting picture, and the form is almost hard to pick up on when you first look at it. Then you can see the bird, swallowing a head, it appears, and it just screams trickster to me. Raven is really messing things up. I like all the pictures, though, and I like the trickster gods.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what William said about how life needs the trickery. It needs balance. Without that balance of good and evil, the world would essentially fall apart. Sure, things would seem good for a while without the tricks and deviousness, but then it would get too perfect. I mean, who needs that? It would be totally boring! So, I agree with William's comment about the gods.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ashley, it does take a few minutes to discern that they are trickster Deities. A Second glance if you will. Yet, the longer i seem to stare the more i seem to feel at ease with them, that there is something more to them than meets the eye. I agree with William bout how life needs the balance of good and bad. But i dont really agree that the trickster Deities are always necessary, yes we need alittle out of the ordinary and juvenial but that doesn't mean we have to have trickery. Cunning and wit yes bit deciet no...
ReplyDeleteI like these pictuers. I think they are very interesting. I like how we did Goddess last week and the Gods this week. I think I lke the RAve one the best. I like it because it is one of those hiden pictures, Bacause you see the drawing or paint that the artist wants you to see, but then you also are able to see in the picture or painting what you want to see, or make out of your own mind.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what ashley said about them being not tricksters or rule breakers just other regular gods. But I also agree with what Sam n said about when you look at them longer your seem to be mroe at ease with them, and that there is smoething to them then meets the eye. I alos liked about what william said about we need a balance of good and evil in your lifes. IF out these things like would be to easy and boring.
ReplyDeleteI agree with William's statement on how life would be a little boring with out some trouble makers. Also with Sam Ny had said about younger siblings being juvenile and devious. Having a younger brother I have learnd the hard way that they are rarely up to any good. Maybe in some cultures thats how they perceived the trickster gods. Like a younger god with not alot of responsibility, and who dose not have anything else better to do then make your life a little more miserable.
ReplyDeletethese pictures all simblize the misjife part of life. i agree with ashley s is saying that little kids are misgeveuse. i think that the natives thought this proses was the gods teaching the juviniles the right way of life thro fun and bad thing. also thro persinal expearinces they could tell stories relating to the gods.
ReplyDeletelike what some of the others have said these pictures represent the juvinile said of humanity but the also show that looks are also very decieving to others if they are not carefully watched. the others have said interesting comments but to me these pictures represent the tricksters of each of the different versions with greek, hindu, norse, native american, and egyptian sides to the stories.
ReplyDeletePeronaly I like the Tickster Gods because they show that gods are not always perfect and Godly. They can also have fun. The Trickster gods show a kind of balance between all the Gods in a Culture. I don't quite know how to explain the balance, but it's almost like they are needed to show the fun side of a culture, or the uniqueness of a culture. These God's could almost be like heros to a culture, of corse they are God's, but they almost have the same traits as a hero. They can be looked up on by all the people of a culture, even the childeren, they aren't always perfect, and they are unique and unusual compared to other God's.
ReplyDeleteI like how sam Ny. said that the Tickster Gods show the juvenile side of deitys. They are juvenile, fun, and devious. These are deffinately not the traits of gods. these are traits of a human, which brings me back to how they are almost like heros. They aren't perfect like other Gods.
ReplyDeleteI don't think all of these pictures represent the gods in their most "trickster-like" states, but I still think that they show decent depictions of all of them. My favorite is probably Loki just because I think he looks like he's trying to hide the dragon thing under his cloak. The others aren't quite as appealing to the eye, but are nonetheless interesting to look at. I don't really care for the Native American or Egyptian pictures simply because they're only in 1D and not 2D or 3D. Loki is definately in 3D and I think that that helps to better portray his "Trickster-like" appearance. The ones with less "D's" just aren't as fun to look at. Overall I think they're all okay to look at for a while, but the more "D's" they have the better.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually going to side with Melanie again just because I can =). I do think that people who think they're funny with all of their "trickery" and what not can pretty annoying sometimes. I also think that life just wouldn't be as fun without it though because everyone has their moments when they feel like decieving someone just for the hell of it or just to see if they can get away with it. I personally enjoy decieving people simply to see whether or not I can get away with it. I think it's kind of fun, but I do try to keep it somewhat to a minimum. Sometimes.
ReplyDeletehmmmm tricksters, well I believe that everyday that goes without a laugh is a day not worth living. Sometimes in life, it takes a laugh ,or a not so serious moment to get the big picture. If we walked around not every smiling, or laughing, we wouldn't get to live like we do. I think these gods do that for us. I know when I am having a bad day, and something random or unexpected makes me smile, It makes me realize how I took that day for granted, and really apprieciate I'm still here, still breathing today.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Lizz,
ReplyDeleteI agree with the raven's picture as being the most interesting. I love how there are hidden pictures within the picture, which really represent life, and how there is so much hidden within the simplest things. I like to think that those hidden pictures within the raven show how he can hide things, or trick you to make you see what you think you're seeing, or...not seeing. DECEPTION
life is really tricky. everything in life has something going on with it and is never perfect. if life was perfect and everything went the right way everytime it would suck because we wouldnt know the bad from the good everything would be the same and boreing. my favorite picture has to be the raven because its kinda like life there alot going on and is real creative.
ReplyDeleteI like the picture of Loki the best. He looks like a fairly ordinary warrior until you look under his cloak. There he literally has "tricks up his sleeve." I like how this sculpture shows that you never really know what a person might be hiding. He is my favorite of all of the trickster gods and I feel that this was a good portrayal of him.
ReplyDeleteThe picture of Raven confused me for a little bit, which is very interesting since he is a trickster. The picture is crazy looking and has many hidden pictures within it. It appears that the Raven is eating a person's head, and the red and black patterns appear to symbolize something. It almost looks like there is a little man in his stomach. I like this picture because it is different. This shows Raven with less humanlike qualities than the other pictures which reminds you to remember that he is a god.
I agree with Ettje when she said that every day that goes without a laugh is a day not worth living. Living life to the fullest requires you to have fun and to laugh. The trickster gods remind me that even gods have fun, so why shouldn't we. Playing tricks on people is always fun, and these gods promote trickery while teaching lessons. They tell you not to take life too seriously and to have fun every day.

ReplyDeleteI think that the tricksters gods would look a little more evil. I think that there has to be a person or persons that create havoc in society other wise it would be a perfect world and it would be kind of boring. Most people like jokes so they kind of have a purpose. If it wasn't for tricksters nobody would laugh and life would be very dull and boring so that is why they exist, to throw a little excitment into life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ettje. We all have to laugh at something otherwise we would be bored to death and nothing would ever happen thats exciting. We would all walk around be bored and looking like a bunch of idiots. That is why I think ther trickster gods came about. I makes us feel happy and proud that something is going to happen every day.
ReplyDeleteEveryone needs a good laugh and we all have our own secrets and slighlty evil thoughts, I believe these deity pictures represent that well. My favorite is Krishna, who always manages to look pleased. I relate a lot to her. I most likey would fit in well with this crowd. I love the thrill, however sometimes it gets me in trouble. It's all part of being young and growing up, and so I will enjoy it while it lasts.
ReplyDeleteWe have not talked alot about tricksters in class but i have a hard time understanding what they stand for. I think of a mean little bully in school that picks on little kids, then i try not to hold on to it so tightly and look at these pictures and what they symbolis. They remind me of what we have in out everyday life. People lie and cheat to get away with live. I am not sure if that is what they represent but its true, in everyday life people feel like to fit in or to look better they must trick the mind of others so they look better.
ReplyDeletelife is tricky and these pictures to me kinda remind me of that. You dont learn right from wrong if it wasnt for good things and bad.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite picture is the raven its very different and makes you think more that one thing and doesnt really give off exactly what it is meaning. you can put your own thoughts into it and believe what you want.
I agree with Katie about what she said about Loki. it makes me wonder if thats how we got the saying about having tricks up our sleeves.

these pictures are in the order of pretty regular they are just smart asses they like to have a good laugh and hang out they make things more interesting without the tricksters you wouldn't have much but a boring drama filled myth
ReplyDeletei like ettje's point of view on the taking things for granted and needing the laughter to get through some days it's quite true and it is pretty important they might seem bad in most stories but i dig em'
