this picture I have seen before it seems like. To me it looks like the univers is being sucked into something, or the sun is. I think that it can relate to the Greek stories, I dont know really why I think that but it just seems more Greek then anything else. I feel like I relate to this picture because everyone gets sucked into thigs that they dont want to be involved in or cant handle it at the time. I think that everyone can relate to it because everyone has to deal with things that they dont want to do or cant do at the time, we are all just humans nothing more and nothing less.
This picture reminds me of Uranus. It also makes me think of Heaven in various myths, because of its far away, yet attainable aspect. It seems to be a reminder to us that we can reach the seemingly impossible. The name of the formation, grand-design, reminds me of God from the Christian story, and how we are all a part of his design. Yet, this is probably my least favorite of all the pictures.
As Lizz said, it looks like the Universe is being sucked into something. I think that this relates to our everyday life, because we sometimes feel like things are beyond our control, which relates back to stories of gods/goddesses. I agree with Lizz's comment.
This picture is harder for me to talk about than the rest. To me, I see a calm witin a storm, and through all the darkness and motion, light and peace comes through to us. I see this picture, and I think of life and how the Myths we are studying are trying to speak to us about life. How out of the darkness , we can see light and view things we hadn't taken th time to see before or make sense of.
To respsonse of what Lizz and Melanie said, about the universe being sucked into something, is really relatable to life. But that is how life is, we get sucked into stuff we don't exactly want to do, but in life we need to find a way to embrace what we get sucked into, and realize there may be a bigger picture to what we are jus looking at(Maybe there is a bigger picture to this?).
to response to what melanie said, about it being a reminder to us that we can reach the seemingly impossible. I think that is really cool, how she took what i said and added more on and make it all come back around, just like life does. I also liked what ettje said about life just being that way, and how we do need to find away to embrace waht we get sucked into, and not always looking at it in a bad way.
This picture reminds me of what heaven would kind of look like. Since in many of the stories that we have read about so far, have some reference to a underworld/heaven. One thing that i realy like about this picture is that it is something real, that science has proven that there are places around the universe that are absolutly stunning. In our stories like with the Christan and Uganda myths, heaven is described as a safe haven. When you look at this picture, for me i see the place they were describing.
when i look at this i see the world being pulled away and i see an eye in the middle it looks like an old man's eye so it looks as though wisdom is the final point and that you have to go through each level to get to the end which is going to be death, rebirth, and eternal wisdom. i don't really know what that ties into but thats what i see
I liked how Ettje compared the picture with darkness and motion, calm with in a storm. When you look at it thats exaclty how i would compare it. In the midst of the darkness there is light, and how when you look at the center of them swirl there is a since of calmness.
To me this picture is obviously one of many galaxies in our universe which undoubtedly contains several nebulas. And within each nebula is a solar system and inside each solar system is a series of planets. All of those things containing things within things seems to relate to some of the morals and ideas which are hidden within all of these myths and all of the stories that we've read and discussed in class. The suns and novas in this galaxy look like they could be all of the gods with their "Mighty beams of light!" It could even represent about 500 Apollos or Ras, those are Sun Gods for all of you less informed children. Either way I think it's a very interesting piece and I'll be looking forward to more like it. Preferably in higher definition. =)
I think that I would have to agree with Ashley S. and her idea of this particular galaxy representing a "Heaven" from one or all of the stories we've read. I also think that one of those solar systems that just so happens to be hiding in there could be a very unique and very "Safe Haven" as Ashley said. Then again there's always that chance of finding a place much more like an Underworld than a Heaven. Either way you look at it I think if you manage to find any of those two worlds, be it Heaven or Hell, would still be an amazing sight to see. I think her comment makes the most sense of any of the previously posted comments. P.S. Ashley, you get points for good spelling today!
When I look at this picture, I see the sky. This shows the mystery of the sky and makes the stars look alive, like the gods who live there in mythology. It shows how everything is centered around a single point, and that everything revolves around that place. This place could be viewed as a god, such as Zeus. The stars around it could be viewed as some of the other Olympians, like Athena, Hera, and Hermes. Greek mythology included different "people" being put in the sky as stars, and this picture shows how this could work out. The stars could be the different life forms put in the sky by the gods, as well as the gods and goddesses themselves.
I agree with Ettje when she talked about how we can see light out of the darkness. When we start to learn something new, it can seem like darkness and confusion, but once we learn more about it and begin to understand it, we can see something amazing. This picture shows that if you look closer at something, such as the sky at night, you can see something new and interesting. You might even find something beautiful that you never knew existed. Before this class, I didn't know very much about other cultures' myths. I have learned more about them, and have developed my own ideas about the cultures based on these myths. One example was the Ugandan myth of creation. I hadn't known anything about Uganda other than its geographical location, but by studying the myth, I was able to learn about a culture that is unique and interesting.
This picture reminds me of Frigg. While I was doing some research for our assignment, it said something about how frigg was associated with orion's belt, which is a galaxy, and this picture reminds me of some type of galaxy. Also this picture just reminds me of stories I have heard on how the God's live in/above the universe, and all the red dots remind me of all different types of Gods.
I agree with what Ashley s. says on how it reminds her of heaven. It also reminds me of some perfect, bright place like heaven, and this picture is deffinately stunning, no doubt about that! I really think it is cool how scientists could get a picture of something so elegent and full of symbolism. most people who are not in this mythology class will not think of any symbolism with this picture. I think it is cool that i can look at a a picture of stars and find so much meaning in it.
I believe that this is a very interesting picture. When I see this picture it reminds me of Men in Black the movie. If you think about it we never really look at the stars on a clear night because we are always asleep. We also never take time to appreciate what might be out there. I think the Native Americans understude the Universe alot better than we do to day. With what they have they figured out a lot more than we have with the technological advances today.
I agree with Brandon and how this is just one of the many galaxies in our universe. There are numerous amounts of planets and stars that we will never be able to explore because they are simply to far away. I think that we can try, but it will be very hard. Unless we can travel faster than the speed of light we can make it..... Maybe.
in response to the people of the sucked in idea i think that it can relate to the greeks as well as anyone you just have to find the link the picture being sucked in could be things coming out as well the expansion of the worlds the thing could be alot like a tornado where it forms the same vortex as a whirlpool, but sucks things up instead of dragging them down so this to me represents all of the stories in their creation
To me this is a picture of something being formed. Something deep in the universe that is being molded, maybe from a black hole. It is being pulled in a central direction. If you look really hard at the swirl i almost seems like an eye, bright and clear in the center, and dark around. As if a void is being formed through cataclysmic events. I also see a brightness, a majestic glow emanating from the red and white stars. It is showing a beauty, a bright new beginning. The start of a new life, somewhere in the universe. With a central purpose, one that draws and entices, with hints of danger.
I agree with Ashley on the aspect of this resembling heaven, its beauty and poise speak louder than words. I also agree with Brandon and Austin, its just a small part of a grander scheme of life, a small section in the vast universe. I really am sorry but i do not understand what William was meaning, maybe because i dont really believe that way or just because i am not fulling understanding what he means. It does remind me of one creation story, big bang theory, i don't believe in that but it does remind me of that theory. Mainly in the aspect that it all came from a vortex or black hole like object/thing/place.
This photo is amazing to me. its like looking into another world. I always wonder whats out there in space, other worlds or more people like us. In the picture it looks like it could be sprialing into another world. All the myths would what is out there come to life in this picture is you just use your imagination. Miranda
I agree with Sam Ny. It could be something being formed, a new begining. Maybe its a planet being formed. The red dots all around remind me of stars or other planets. Miranda
To me this picture looks like the universe. All it looks like is a bunch of little plants swirling around makeing one big planet. I really dont know what this goes with besides its a creation picute i think.
This picture looks really familiar and like something i have seen before. its really cool and i like how all the stars are everywhere. it looks like everything is being sucked into something. it reminds me of space.
I like how Katie said it reminds her of something being based around a certain point. and how it could be like a god like Zeus. some others said that it reminds them of like looking into another world, which to me is kinda cool to look at it that way.
this picture is really hard to put together. its of a spiral gallixy but im not quit shure i not how to add it to mythology besides in greek the gods have planets and stars named after them
This picture shows the universe and what john said hard to put together all the pieces and figure out what is in the drawing but all isee is what the universe is supposed to look like.
