"The Creation of Man" and Detail - Michelangelo
Sistine Chapel Ceiling - Rome, Italy 1511

  1. When I look at his picture, I see it as the Creation of Man in many different ways. God is reaching down to touch Adam, the first man, and give him life. This is very etiological, because it is the beginning of life for human kind. Along with that, it is metaphysical. It is showing the relationship between God and man, in the very most intimate way--that of a creation and its creator. This makes me think of how we, as humans, view God. Some see Him as a creator, as a symbol of life, or as infinite others. That seems very psychological to me, because it is how we perceive God. Those are my thoughts on this painting.

  2. To me this painting resembles less of the Creation of man and more of a major point in the artistic world of the renaissance where man learned to create his own images in his own image. And throughout History we've seen the drastic change in art forms and religious aspects in these older works. Michaelangelo, the painter of this piece, more than likely read the Bible and drew most of the imagery for this painting from those texts. To me their is less of a Biblical presence in this then there is a Historical and Artistic presence. My ideas may not be correct to the religious world, but to me they make perfect sense.

Personally I think that Melonie has a very good point, but I don't believe that we share the same religious views on the piece. Like I said in my comments on the painting I look more at the aristic side of the work than I do at the Biblical or "Creation Story" side of it. In the sense of the Creation Story, however, I think that she's got the symbolisms from our class discussions worked in very neatly and when I try and look from a religious point of view I can tell that what she wrote fits in very nicely with the artwork. However in my personal opinion I believe that art like this should be viewed as a great masterpiece and not a great symbol of religion.

  4. This painiting shows me the christian way of how God created man. God is reaching out to give Adam life. I think that it is very etiological and scientific because it is when man was first made and in other beliefs or thoughts the begining was science. I also think that this painting could be metaphysical because, depending on certain views, it connects people with God.

I like how Brandon says the the painting is more Michelangelo's opinion of the "Creation Story". Michelangelo had his view on creation and he wanted to share his view to the world through his art. I think its a very good thought.

Brandon has a good point when he says that this painting is a masterpiece and should be viewed as one. As I stated earlier, I believe that this can be interpreted in many different ways, and since Brandon, himself, is an artist, it makes sense that he would view art in a different way than someone like me, who is viewing it as a Christian.

  7. When i first looked at this painting, becides the point that it was beautifully done and is a piece of art work that will always be rememberd in history, it describes the tale of how God made man and how he gave Adam life. The painting almost brings a grace and ellagance to the story of how in the Christian view the earth was made, its kinda like when when you look at it you will know the whole story of adam and eve.

  8. One good point about Brandon's blog that i find kind of inturesing is that we do make God in our own image. Even though we have absolutly no idea what he could look like, we always picture him with a reguar face, arms, legs and so forth. That we cant picture things we dont fully understand or have never physically seen before. Though god made is only son Jesus in our image, dosnt really mean that God is. Its a very inturesting thing to contimplate.

  9. When I look at Michelangelo’s painting of “The Creation of Man” in the Sistine Chapel, I notice that many aspects of mythology can be related to it. The most obvious part to me was relating to etiology. This painting shows how one person perceived God giving Adam the spark of life and the origin of man. This painting shows God reaching out his hand to make Adam come to life. Another way of analyzing this painting is to look at the anthropologic way of thinking. This shows that people worship a higher power because God gave them life. Because God touched Adam’s finger, humans are able to live and breathe, so people try to give back to him.

The next way of analyzing this painting is to look at the metaphysics side of things. Metaphysics examines the relationship between humans and “the mystery.” Since no humans know exactly how life came around, they try to figure it all out. Michelangelo in particular believes the Christian side of things. Since no one actually saw the creation, he drew out what he thought happened. This painting is now a way of demonstrating how humans gained the spark of life.

I agree with Ashley that this painting shows the creation of Adam. I agree that it brings a grace to the idea of Adam and Eve and will be remembered in history. This painting contains so much detail that it could not be forgotten. I also agree that it shows the whole story of Adam, though I do not see as much the story of Eve in this painting. The intimacy of the creation of man and his creator is something that this painting portrayed in an awesome manner.

  11. Well When I look at Michalengelo's painting the sudden thought of Human Relations. God giving adam the spark of life, but Got also gave man the heart to love, the mind to think , and the hands to feel. Its the greatest gift a person can recieve. It really makes a person wonder if God can give the spark of life to Adam, then when does he take the spark away?

  12. I really like how Ashley and Katie thought of how graceful and beautiful this painting really is. Yah, hello a painting of some hands doesn't sound too peaceful, but really it is! It shows how beautiful life really can be :) I bet there are secrets behind this painting that know one will ever know......

  13. I really appreciate this picture for it's beauty, the whole view and then the closer view both bring such powerful messages forward. I pondered what exactly "the spark of life" was? Then I remembered to not think as literally as I tend to do and had a whole new idea about it all. I wondered if it ment more than just bringing him to life and more like God giving Adam survival skills, new ideas , and his own thoughts. I'd like to think that God has a special spark for all of us.

  14. I think that in this painting that it is amazing is see God as a being. and to see him at work, creating adam and putting life in him. it is like he is putting his finishing "touches" on adam, which is life itself. i feel like we take life for granted sometimes. it can be taken away so easy. i wonder how easy it is for god to create all the things he does. and to think it all started with one man and created all the people we have in our word now is seriously amazing.

  15. When I look at this painting I just see a painting and how Michaelangelo might of believe man was created. I do not believe that this is how man was actually created and that God put the spark of life into man. I believe that someone can believe what they want to believe in; not matter if it is true or not true. Someone can say what they think is true, or they can lie about the truth. I believe that we all have the right to speak our mind when we are asked. But, it all comes back to the folktales; it changes each time and it is told, but the perspective does not change only the story does.

  16. I believe that Brandon has a very good point. This is just a painting of one of the many ways that man was "Created". Michaelangelo could have read it in the Bible or a book for all we know. I agree with Brandon that this is just a painting by Michaelangelo, and this painting represents his idea of how man was created. Who knows he could of just painted it for fun, we will never know the truth in why he actually painted this picture.

  17. I see the bottom picture as God putting life in man. As if breath comes from a spark or touching, finger to finger. All around the painting of Michaelangelo are angels or Deitys, welcoming the new existence of life as we know it, yet man not fully comprehending what is it that Michaelangelo meant for we all interpret differentyly. I see the "spark" of life, I do not see the formation of or creation of life, just a crude representation of what Michaelangelo believed and interpreted life's orgigin or creation to be

  18. Response to Katie/Ashley's...

I do not see anything that has to do with "creation" really, I see man and God, hands that extend a finger to each other as if lost lovers are grasping for each other. I am sorry Katie and Ashley and anyone else who i am disagreeing with but it does not (to me) show much to any of a semblance of something being created or formed. I see a "life force", a "spark", or an "energy transfer" from one deity to a measly mortal man. One with no essence in him, just an empty shell. It is more of a breath of life than creating something. If it were to have some semblance of the creation days then for me understanding his true meaning of creation would be easier.

  19. The bottom picture makes me think of God reaching down and giving the first life to Adam. People see God as many things, such as a creator. Both pictures could show different things depending on what you believe in.

I think that Ettje has a really good point =) Some believe that God created everything on the Earth. I like when she said "if God can give the spark of life to Adam, then when does he take the spark away?" I think that's a really good point!!! If he gave it to you then when is he going to take it away.. is it his choice? or does it just happen?

This picture really dosnt mean much to me i dont beleave that god created the earth thiers is no fisical proof he did besides the holy bible whitch is just a book. But i can say that Michelangelo is a very good artist.

  22. This picture shows God putting the spark of life into Adam the first man on earth. This is one of Michelangelo's most famous pieces of art in the Sistine Chapel which took more than three years to complete.

  23. when I look at this picture, i think have how God created man kind. I feel that this picute is showing how God put life into Adam. I think it is interesting that it shows God in man kind. Most of the time when we talk about God, he is more as a spirt instead of a man, i think it is cool how the artist did it this way to make it seem like God is closer to us, and is more like us then the some spirt that is high up, and maybe more of a teacher. But really it shows us that he could be more like us.

  24. When i look at this picture i see two people and creation. It looks like the beggining of life. Its a symbole of the lord and a introduction to the beggining of life and also could be the beggining to myth because not all people beleave the same thing. This picture has lots of color and creation to it and is a good symbale to life. This picture could also be really touching to religious people. nicely done

  25. I feel that the picture does resemble the creation of mankind and life alltogether but i also feel like the artist was just religious and liked that kind of art work.

  26. I see creation, and two people. The picture is a way of living; it's like the beginning of life. It's a symbol of god giving life. picture has meaning to the biggining in both myth and creation and religus back ground but not all people beleve the same thing. Its very vibrint in color.

I also think it was cool how ashley and katie said how pretty the picture was, and how graceful. most people talked about how it look how God put life into Adam, but they made it different, and gave a new way of thing about it.

i think that the picture doesn't make sense adam is moving is arm up and reaching out to touch god how can he do this without life and why would god have to touch him if he is indeed almighty then he should be able to do it from a distance or whereever he wanted

what is the spark of life do we have one is this just a response to the life of god and all that jazz i would say that none of this is a good representation because no one thing or being can posess that much power and things can't happen just out of thin air
