This is a wierd picture of cronus eating his children. It simbolizzes the fear that cronus has from his children. the far of his kids taken the trown from him.

  2. To me this picture really represents how sick and twisted Cronus was when he ate his kids. Although, this doesn't really seem accurate based on the story we read in class, because it said that he swallowed his children whole, and here he is clearly tearing them apart. The fact that Cronus feared being overthrown so much that he would resort to such gruesome tactics really screams to me that he was selfish and self-centered. (P.S. I'm pretty sure this picture is gonna give me nightmares!)

  3. -In regards to John's post:
I agree with John that this picture represents the fear that Cronus had for his children. He was so afraid, that he resorted to what is, essentially, cannibalism. That really freaks me out, personally, and I'm glad that the world doesn't work like this literally.

  4. In the picture you can see cronus fear of his children while he is eating one. I think that instead of eating his children he could have let them live and pass down his thrown to one of his children. If he also showed them wat a good father he could have been they might have not tryed to over throw him.

  5. Hmmmm... This is a very interesting picture. I can see the fear that Cronus has for his children and why he ate them. I believe that we all can tell when some one is afriad of something. I believe that we are afriad for multiple things. Fear comes natural to everything and everybody. Everybody is afraid of something no matter what it is. I believe Cronus was afraid of his children and that is why he would of ate them. I think that he did not believe he was making the same mistake as Uranus, his father, but he actually was. That is why he was over thrown from his rule and he and the Titans fought with the Gods.

  6. I think that this picture is a somewhat over-dramatic image of Cronus compared to how I think that he should look. Also from what I've gathered from the stories that we've read in class his children are supposed to be newborn infants and in this picture I see a fully grown man being eaten. Plus the overall proprotions of Cronus' features are more than a little skewed from what any normal man or Titan should be. But the basic idea of the story of Cronus eating his children is depicted fairly well, if not a little off on the facts. Plain and simple...it could be better.

  7. I think that Melanie and I can both see the inaccuracies within this one specific depiction of Cronus eating one of his children. When compared to the stories that we've read in class I no that this could've been depicted much better and could've shown the real story as it was told in the myth. Then again there's several different ways that these stories have been told so I can see how this may have seemed accurate to Goya when he painted it. He did, however, capture the slightly "off-the-wall" expression that I would expect to be on Cronus' face while he ate his children, but I still believe that had Goya taken into consideration Melanie's ideas on getting his facts right and worked on proportions a little bit then it would have made a much more convincing image of Cronus.
Once again, this picture could've been illustrated much better and much more accurately.

  8. This is a different kind of picture. I dont think i like it very much. this picture is of Cronus eating his children.Cronus eat his children because he feared them. I feel that this picture shows not only him and his fear but every fear in the world to. I think it repersents the fear in life for everyone, because we all have it, and sometimes it is harder to over come ones then others, or some people hava a harder time over coming fear then others.

  9. -in regards to johns and melanie post:
I agree with what both of them said about fear. I also talked about fear in my comment. How cronus was so scared that i hide and eat his children so he wouldn't have to deal with it. i think that sometimes in life people also dont wnat to face thier fears, they would rather just hide them, just like cronus tried to. But it the end it just caused more trouble for him, so maube in life it is better to just face your fears head on then so try to hide them.......

i think that this is a bad depiction of cronus eating his children due to them being gods i don't think that he could tear them apart to eat them in such a fashion and that is why he swallowed them whole i also think that it doesn't much matter if eats his kids because without him doing terrible things to his kids like uranus did to him then you wouldn't have the grounds for the vengeance that his kids and brothers seek on him and the gods wouldn't take over then

  11. thor i'm gonna say that he wasn't as afraid of his children killing him as he was of the prophecy itself and the fear of the prophecy is the reason for all of this if you were told how you would die you would most likely obsess about it and not have any fun so i've gotta say we are all going to die we don't know when it could be tommorow it could be when your 120 but either way if your told how you'll die your stress will go up over it and you will have a fear of whatever it is will kill you which wouldn't be there otherwise that's cronus's problem

  12. Im not going to lie this picture kind of scares me. when i first looked at it i dint realize it was Cronus actually tearing appart his children, in the story that we read i was under the impression that he just swallowed them. This version is just a little more dermatic and graphic. It still gets to the point that Cronus was afraid of his children and thought that the only way to stay in power is to eat his kids.

  13. --About the anonymous post above mine..
Actually, Cronus wasn't told that he was going to die, just be overthrown. Which is why it was so stupid of him to obsess over it, because he could have saved a lot of panic for himself if he would have just let things be. Whenever someone in Greek mythology tried to change a prophecy, it always ended up biting them on the butt, so to speak. But Cronus couldn't die, because he is immortal. I think if he was nicer in the first place, say, not throwing the Hundred-handed giants and the Cyclopes back into Tartarus, then he probably wouldn't have to worry about it; the prophecy would have probably never been foretold. Either way, yes he was afraid, and fear can be a good thing as well as a bad thing, but he feared the wrong things, which is what lead to his defeat.

  14. I agree with Melanie and John, becides that im very happy that we do not have cannibalism in our every day lives. This picture does prove that Cronus was very scared and instead of just killing them i guess eating them was a better solution.

  15. To me this is a guy who is not all there mentally. he is confused and full of fear. He uses his fear to get the best of him. Here fear is bad and only harms him and ultimately leads to his demise where uranus, his father, just lost a body part he loses his life in the end.

  16. I agree with what John and Melanie said. This is creepy and disgusting. And it was fear. Luckily this is not how life is now, eating people cause you fear what may happen in the future.

  18. I think this picture demonstrates the craze that overcame Cronus when he thought about his children overthrowing him. Instead of giving his children a chance to love him, he automatically swallowed them, creating a hatred that eventually resulted in his removal from the thrown. I think that if he would not have swallowed his children, they might not have overthrown him. Even if they did overthrow him eventually, it probably would have been much less painful for him-both mentally and physically. He could have avoided the mutilation and it would be much easier to give up the thrown to a friend rather than someone you have hated since birth.

While the picture accurately demonstrates the craze, I disagree with how Cronus "ate" his children. In the story that we read in class, he swallowed them whole, so they could eventually come back. By mutilating and tearing the body apart as depicted in this painting, there is no way they could have come back to overthrow him. Another problem that I have with this picture is that his children were infants when they were swallowed. This painting shows a miniature person, not a baby. It looks like a full grown human, just smaller than Cronus.

  19. I agree with what Lizz said about fear. It was a very good point about how Cronus hid from his fear by swallowing his children. This is a valuable lesson that anyone could take away from this story. Running away from your fears will not help you and eventually you will have to face them regardless of how much effort you put into avoiding them. Even if the thought of something makes you crazy, if you confront it right away it will be easier than putting it off. In the end it will save you time and energy for pretty much the same outcome.

Cronus didn't actually lose his life. He's just as immortal as all the other gods/Titans. He was chopped into pieces an thrown into the deepest regions of the Underworld for all eternity, but not dead. Which, in a way, is even worse. Because now he is eternally in complete and total pain, and he's imprisoned. I think that dying would be a vacation compared with that.

  21. this picture deffinately reminds me of how cronus became jealous of his childeren and started to eat them whole. the only thing different about this picture, and the story is that he is taking bites into the person instead of just swolllowing it whole. he seems more like a cannible instead of a jealous father, but then again instead of saying father i should say powerful being because i doubt that a father would eat his own childeren. it is a very disturbing thought.

  22. In response to Katie H....
I agree with Katie. I think deffinately that it would have been better if Cronus got to know his childeren before he ate them. Cronus would have deffinately had a better death if he would have not done that. He would have not been demolished.

  24. I think this Picture really shows how jealousy and competition can really devour a person, which turns and twists them to showing the monster they always have been, or the monster they created with thier desires, and jealousy, Like it did to Uranus, and Cronos

  25. I agree wih what Katie said, about how when a person tries to swallow thier fears, and bury them deep inside of a person, it just ends up festering, untill one day it either comes out , or becomes a total monster, and eats you up! ( Maybe that's why this picture, shows a person getting consumed, bite by bite, maybe it's Cronos getting ate up bite by bite, by the fear he tries to hide....

  26. This picture to me makes me think about how nasty Cornus is to be jealous of his children and eat them! i think that they picture doesnt really match the story we read because it said that he swallowed them whole and the picture doesnt really show swallowing them more of "eating them". He pretty much went crazy when he thought that his own children might over rule him.

  27. in response to what Liz said.
I agree when she said he had fear because he did. he was so afraid that his children would be stronger then him and over rule him so he did what ever he could to get rid of them..i like how she said it shows "every fear in the world" and how "everyone has them "

  28. This is a very strange picture. However, I love how it portarits the rage and almost fear he had at even the thought of being over thrown. The insanity of jealousy and predatotr like action one may use. It makes me sad to look at ,but I still can relate.

  29. i think this picture is really weird. i dont see why someone would want to eat there own childern because they think they might be stronger then them. You would think most people that have kids and would want there kids to grow up and be stronger then them. But by the way this picuter looks this guy shouldnt have kids.

  30. First of all this picture is scary. I don't understand why he would eat his child. i understand he was jelous, but i don't understand how he would want to hurt his child. For example in my life, I would never ever want any harm to come to my child. Plus i would never eat him. Its just really hard for me to wrap my head arould.

  31. To me this picture resembles how Cronus ate all of his children and how they wanted to get revenge on Cronus. The picture to me looks dark and evil and it shows how brutal these stories can really be.
